Eligibility

CBEST is an option used to verify basic skills proficiency.

The Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), in conjunction with the Evaluation Systems group of Pearson is continuing the development and administration of the California Basic Educational Skills Test™ (CBEST®). The CBEST was developed to meet requirements of laws relating to credentialing and employment. The CBEST is designed to test basic reading, mathematics, and writing skills found to be important for the job of an educator; the test is not designed to measure the ability to teach those skills. This test requirement in no way replaces any of the other requirements of subject matter knowledge, professional preparation, and practice teaching or field experience used in the issuance of credentials.

Subject Matter Advisory Panels (SMAP)

Subject Matter Advisory Panel members are involved in defining the content of the teacher preparation program standards and the examination in their subject area. They typically develop and/or review subject matter requirements for their program standards and examination and review test items and test item formats (e.g., constructed-response items and multiple-choice items) and other components essential to sound test development.

California educators with subject matter experience and expertise are currently needed to serve on a Subject Matter Advisory Panel in the following area(s):
